Message from Lamar Sanders

Dear UGFTV Students:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Film and Television program.  To take full advantage of our program, immerse yourself in all the crafts, beginning with the written word.  To meet the challenges in the communications arts, our graduates need to know script, directing, producing, shooting, editing, acting, sound, art direction, animation and distribution.

In addition, almost half of your classes are in general liberal arts and cinema studies.  Absorb and enjoy the ideas and vantage points that come with the study of history, aesthetics, philosophy, science, business, literature and languages.

Observe the rules for graduation in a reasonable progression of courses and your time here at NYU should prove profitable.  You are here to learn, make work, and to nurture contacts that will provide you with a life-long network of collaborators.  Ours is a time tested curriculum which, though ever shifting with the tides of the industry, is based on a solid principle: visual storytelling.

Students are permitted and strongly encouraged to experience the full range of artistic expression by taking classes in other departments in Tisch such as the Departments of Cinema Studies, Photography, and Drama.  In addition, students can take advantage of the many study abroad and internship programs starting in their junior year.

We provide you with a Production HandBook to guide you through the challenging process of making media here at NYU and an Academic HandBook,  designed to assist you in tailoring a college course schedule of your choosing.

Ask questions often, seek out and spend time with an advisor.  The students who have been the most successful here in UGFTV are those who have taken the time to figure out how to make the most of our program.

Have a blast!
