2009-10 GRANT & AWARD OPPORTUNITIES
The following is a time line for grants and scholarships that will be available to students in the department of Undergraduate Film and Television in the 2009-2010 academic year. The opportunities listed below are the major annual awards distributed through the department. Additional announcements for award opportunities from outside sources are posted in Room 901, 721 Broadway, and are updated periodically.
OCTOBER
Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker's Award Competition: Full-time students enrolled in the film program must submit an original 50-second script, a production plan, and a school transcript. Ten finalists nationwide will each be awarded $7,500 to produce their scripts. The winner will receive $10,000 and the film will debut on movie screens nationwide. Scripts should be uploaded directly to ccrfa.com by 11:59pm on October 16.
Post-Production Awards: Departmental grants for the completion of upper-level productions. A nomination is required from the professor of the production class in which the film was made. Nominees will be contacted to submit an application, budget, and a rough cut of their film on DVD. Nomination forms will be available to professors during the first week of October. The nomination is for all post-production awards available to the Department, distributed at the discretion of the selection committee.
In past years, the Post Production Awards have included the following named awards:
Thomas William Gidro-Frank Production Award, Warner Bros. Pictures Film Production Award, Malcolm Ross Memorial Award, Clive Davis Award for Excellence in Music.
NOVEMBER
Sloan Foundation Grant: Designated to encourage students to portray intellectually engaging, entertaining images of science and technology. This year, four $10,000 script awards and two $25,000 production grants will be available for developing scripts into short films. Applicants must attend a colloquium in the fall and are required to consult with an assigned science advisor. Application deadline will be April 15, 2010. The Sloan Foundation publicizes the results with a full-page ad in Variety in the Spring.
FEBRUARY
*Russell Hexter Filmmaker Grant: A monetary award for students currently enrolled in upper-level production classes. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Application requirements include rough cut of film and budget outline; after applying, peer evaluation forms must be completed in applicant's current production class. Application materials will be due in March; Rough Cuts will be due the following fall. Please Note: Students applying for this grant MUST be enrolled in a production class.
*George Heinemann Production Award: A faculty nomination is required for this award administered by the King Family Foundation. The award of up to $10,000 is to be used to produce a senior thesis film, and is given to an upper-level production student who has shown outstanding promise in the department and who demonstrates financial need.
APRIL
*The Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation Award: Multi-year tuition scholarships, continuing from sophomore year (or year of selection) through senior year, up to an annual amount of $2,500. Application, letters of recommendation and transcript required. Application deadline: April 15, 2010. Applications may be downloaded from kingfoundation.org.
